OKLAHOMA DEMOCRATS: THE FIGHT CONTINUES
Democrats retain all seats, Tulsa elects first Black mayor. The movement for freedom grows.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK —The final results are in for the 2024 general election and former President Trump has prevailed. As predicted, he won the majority of votes in Oklahoma. Something was different this election cycle.
This election cycle saw a movement behind the Democratic candidate, Vice President Harris, like we’ve not seen in at least a decade. The momentum gained from her campaign of joy and hope galvanized voters from across the political spectrum and volunteers showed up all over the state. VP Harris’ campaign was more than a moment, it was a movement that continues. Her campaign mantra of ‘When We Fight, We Win’ was embraced and will continue to motivate voters that value freedom.
The coalition of freedom motivated volunteers from across the state worked hard throughout this election cycle and made it very clear that local elections matter. Democrats retained every seat in the state legislature bringing back every incumbent that ran and electing new Democrats in seats vacated by Democrats. This is a grand feat in an election year when the Republican presidential candidate had such a strong showing.
Additionally, in Tulsa, our second largest city, the people made their voices heard and voted for Monroe Nichols. Mayor- elect Nichols in this nonpartisan race is a registered Democrat who has made history as Tulsa's first African-American mayor. The significance of Tulsa, Oklahoma electing an African American mayor in 2024 is profound considering the historical significance of the Tulsa Race Massacre, a mere 103 years ago.
The elections of Mayor-elect Nichols and the retention of Democratic seats in our state legislature represent hard won fights that can be built upon in coming elections. Though ultimately, Oklahoma largely voted for Republicans, Oklahoma’s final results were less dramatic than the national outcome. Oklahoma moved less to the right than the national average.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party will build on these results. We will continue the fight. We will continue to fight for reproductive freedom, for common sense gun laws, for public education, and for economic opportunity. No despair, nor go awaying quietly. We continue to organize, educate and register more voters. We will continue to build community and rejoice in each victory for freedom. Oklahoma Democrats are dedicated and resilient and we will take these strengths with us as we build and persevere.
Yours in hope and resilience,
Alicia Andrews
Chairwoman
Oklahoma Democratic Party
